Helsinki Police Department celebrated 185 years

Helsinki Police Department, which was founded in 1826, celebrated its 185th anniversary on 21 February. The programme for the anniversary, which is called a heritage day, includes the awarding of medals and a memorial for police officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty. The Helsinki Cop of the Year is also revealed and awarded a prize. Police Sergeant Pentti Tarvonen has been named Helsinki Cop of the Year.

Finland also faced with a growing problem of illegal immigration

The setting up of a joint investigation team by the Helsinki Police Department and the Finnish Border Guard last June means that the authorities are now in a better position to deal with crimes involving the arrangement of illegal immigration to the Finnish capital. The main task of the team is to uncover and investigate cases involving the arrangement of illegal immigration and trafficking in human beings. The team has, for example, uncovered an attempt to smuggle almost twenty Afghans into Finland. They were brought to Finland in this van.  Illegal immigration is directly connected with organised crime in such areas as pandering and drug offences.

Security survey: Police now more visible in Helsinki

Police are now more visible in Helsinki. In 2006, about 54 per cent of Helsinki residents saw the police every day or on a weekly basis. In 2009, the figure had climbed to 57 per cent. Local residents are also of the opinion that the police are able to solve more drug crimes, home burglaries and car thefts. The results are part of a nationwide security survey, which was carried out by the Provincial Police Command in spring 2009. Read more about the survey (in Finnish).
