The Police College of Finland
The Police College of Finland, Finland’s sole police training establishment, is located in Tampere. It is responsible for recruitment for police training, student selection, diploma and advanced studies in the police service, leadership training, further training and research and development in the police field.
The Hämeenlinna-based Police Dog Training Centre, which is part of the Police College, trains police dog handlers and acquires dogs for the police. The National Police Museum is located in the premises of the Police College of Finland.
Since 1 January 2008 Tampere has been the sole location for police sector training and research in Finland. On that date, the National Police School, which was located in Tampere, and the Espoo-based Police College of Finland were merged into a new training establishment.
The Police College offers the following diploma and advanced programmes: Diploma in Police Studies, Finnish Police Sergeant’s Examination and the Bachelor in Police Command. In addition to diploma and advanced programmes, the Police College also provides further training for police officers and other security training. The Bachelor in Police Command is recognized by the Universities of Tampere in the Master’s Degree programmes in police studies.
The research carried out in the Police College of Finland covers the social and behavioural aspects of police work. The research focus is on crime, crime combating, policing and other issues central to the police service.
The National Police Museum, located in the premises of the Police College of Finland, was opened in autumn 2008. The Museum gives visitors an overview of the Finnish Police and supports training and research. The Museum collects, examines and displays objects connected with the work of the Finnish Police and helps to preserve traditions and history. It serves the public, the police organization and researchers.
