Family member of a Finnish citizen
A residence permit for a family member of a Finnish citizen is issued in Finland or may be applied for abroad. In Finland, the decision on issuing a residence permit for a family member of a Finnish citizen is made by the police department in the applicant's place of residence.
As family members are regarded
In order to enter the country, the family member of a Finnish citizen must apply for a visa from a Finnish mission if, because of his or her nationality, a visa is required for his or her entry in Finland. When applying for a visa, the real reason for entering the country must be given, such as marriage, a registered partnership, a cohabiting partnership, or an intention to marry or start a family.
At their discretion, the police may proceed to a so-called marriage investigation in connection with a resident permit application. This is more frequently resorted to if the spouses have only known each other for a short period.
The fee for residence permits is collected as the application is submitted. A fee is also payable for refusals and cancellations of applications.
