Driving licences for mopeds and light quadricycles

Since 19 January 2013, driving licences for mopeds and light quadricycles are separate documents. A driving licence for a moped (category AM driving licence with special condition 120) does not entitle the holder to drive a light quadricycle. A driving licence for a light quadricycle (category AM driving licence with special condition 121) does not entitle the holder to drive a moped. Only drivers having taken a driving test for both mopeds and light quadricycles are entitled to drive both vehicles.

Driving licences for mopeds issued before 19 January 2013 entitle the holder to drive both a moped and a light quadricycle. The date of issue of the driving licence is indicated on the reverse of the licence.

Moped drivers born before 1985 do not need a driving licence for a moped. In order to drive a light quadricycle, however, you need to have at least a driving licence for mopeds obtained before 19 January 2013, or a new driving licence for a light quadricycle (category AM licence with special condition 121).

Applications for driving licence permits for mopeds and light quadricycles are submitted to the police.  The fee is payable as the application for a permit is submitted. For instructions on submitting a driving licence permit application, see under the section Driving licence permits.

For more information on driving licences and driving tests for mopeds and light quadricycles, contact your local police or the Finnish Transport Safety Agency Trafi.
