Searching for missing persons

The police are responsible for searching for missing persons on land and in inland waters. The Frontier Guard conducts searches at sea.

A search for a missing person will be begun if there is reason to suspect that the person's life is in danger or that he/she has become the victim of an accident or offence. Searches will be begun without delay if the missing person is a child or an elderly person or if he/she is ill and incapable of caring for him/herself. The start of a search is also subject to weather conditions.

Under the Police Act, the police can order any able-bodied person aged 18-54 to assist in the search for a missing person or in saving someone's life, and can requisition against full compensation any necessary technical and other equipment or device that are considered necessary.

Further information on finding missing persons can be obtained from the local police.
