European firearms pass

A European firearms pass facilitates the movement of hunters and those participating in shooting competitions and in other target shooting and their firearms from one EU country to another. Persons taking a firearm or firearm component to another Member State by virtue of the firearms pass must, however, give a reliable account of their participation in the shooting or hunting event.

Some EU countries require that in addition to the firearms pass and an invitation, prior consent or some other permit must also be obtained from the destination country.

A European firearms pass is granted by the local police of the applicant’s municipality of residence on the basis of a verbal application. The European firearms pass is valid for the same period as the relevant permits entered on the pass, but for a maximum of five years from the date of issue. The validity of the firearms pass can be extended if necessary.

When applying for a European firearms pass, the following must be presented:

  • proof of possession permit or parallel permit
  • 2 photographs
  • passport or ID card (A driving licence is not a valid document to establish identity.)
If information on the EU classification of a firearm or firearm component to be included in the pass is not located in the firearms data system, the firearm or firearm component must be presented to the police before the issuing of the European firearms pass. Information on the EU classification of firearms and firearm components has only been systematically entered in the firearms data system for firearms and firearm components examined after 26 November 2012.
