The new Act contains changes in certain driving licence categories and the periods of validity of driving licences. Under the new provisions, the right to drive is valid for a set period, the length of which is 2 - 15 years depending on the driving licence category and the age of the licence holder. Driving licences for cars and motorcycles will as a rule be issued for 15 years, and driving licences for lorries and buses for 5 years at a time. As the period of validity expires, the licence holder should submit an application for renewing the licence to the police. Driving licences granted before 19 January 2013 will remain valid until the expiry date indicated on the card, however no longer than the year 2033. At that time, even old driving licences must at the latest be renewed. Issuing a duplicate driving licence or a change in a special condition attached to the licence will not cause an old driving licence to become valid for a fixed period. The personal data (name and social security number) shown on the driving licence must be up to date. If your family name has changed after marriage, for example, you must apply for a new driving licence.
