The police conducted enhanced traffic enforcement from 10 to 21 August 2026. Enforcement focused on weekdays and particularly on areas near schools.
During the operation, the police focused on the traffic behaviour of unprotected road users, namely cyclists and riders of electric scooters, compliance with pedestrian crossing rules, and vehicle speeds.
Enforcement carried out near schools emphasised the prevention of traffic accidents and dangerous situations.
During the enforcement period, the police imposed sanctions mainly for the following violations:
- 2,237 traffic penalty fees and 459 fines for speeding
- 143 traffic penalty fees for the illegal use of a mobile phone while driving (75 cases of talking on the phone and 68 cases of using the phone manually)
- 113 traffic penalty fees for failure to use safety equipment
- 26 fines for violations of pedestrian crossing rules
- 10 traffic penalty fees for riding a light electric vehicle on a pavement and five traffic penalty fees for cycling on a pavement
- 30 traffic penalty fees for carrying a passenger on a light electric vehicle and seven traffic penalty fees for carrying a passenger on a bicycle
- Six sanctions for operating a light electric vehicle while intoxicated
"The number of sanctions imposed for speeding can be considered significant and concerning, especially considering that a large proportion of the enforcement was carried out in the vicinity of schools, where many children are present," says Chief Superintendent Heikki Kallio of the National Police Board.
It is well known that visible police enforcement helps calm traffic and increases schoolchildren’s sense of safety. In addition to enforcement activities, police patrols also visited school yards to talk with children.
