The police paid attention to speeds, zebra crossing and safety device rules and mobile phone use under a monitoring scheme to keep schoolchildren safe in traffic.

The monitoring scheme was implemented during the first two weeks of school. Through monitoring and the provision of information, the police sought to direct road users’ attention to safe driving speeds, attentiveness, compliance with zebra crossing rules and the overall safety of mobility.

During the scheme, which ended on Sunday, the police intervened in the following cases: 1,887 cases of speeding, 158 cases of failure to use safety devices, 149 cases of holding a mobile phone while driving and 51 cases of non-compliance with traffic lights or signs.

There were also 55 cases of driving, without stopping, past a car that had stopped at a zebra crossing or failing to ensure unobstructed access for a pedestrian on a zebra crossing or a pedestrian approaching a zebra crossing.

In addition, the police intervened in 35 cases of riding a bicycle or driving a light electric vehicle on a pavement.

A temporary driving ban was imposed on 104 drivers.

The police remind drivers of the importance of exercising extreme caution when approaching a child in traffic.
