The police are investigating a shooting in the Viertola school in Vantaa
On 2 April 2024 at 9.08 am, the police received information through the Emergency Response Centre that a shooting had taken place at the Viertola school in Vantaa. According to the information the police was given, three persons were injured.
One victim of the shooting died at the scene. Two other victims are seriously injured.
The victims, aged 12, are pupils of the school. The exact site of the shooting is the Jokiranta school which is administratively a part of Viertola School.
The suspect of the shooting had left the school area when the police arrived at the scene. The police apprehended the suspect at 10 am in Siltamäki in Helsinki, a neighbourhood nearby. The suspect is 12 years old and a pupil of the school. No force was used in the apprehension.
A firearm was found in the suspect's possession. The suspect has admitted to the act during the police's preliminary interview.
The police continue to conduct the investigation at the scene. Calls to the mentioned number can be made today on April 2 until 9 pm and tomorrow on April 3 from 8 am to 9 pm.
The police will give more information about the case today April 2, at 5 pm earliest.
