Police investigating Kontula killing as manslaughter

Police suspect a man in his fifties of manslaughter. The suspect killed a woman aged about 80 with a knife on Saturday 18 July in Kontula, Helsinki.

The attack took place outside entrance C of Kontula metro station after 11.00 am. The attack was recorded on surveillance cameras. Police received information about the attack from paramedics at 11.25 am.

"After the attack, the suspect left Kontula by metro for Mellunmäki, where police arrested him at 12.36 pm. The weapon used in the offence is in police custody," says the head of the investigation, Detective Chief Inspector Juha Piippo.

Police forensic officers carried out a crime scene investigation in Kontula on Saturday. Witnesses are also being questioned as part of the pre-trial investigation.

"Police have questioned the suspect once, and he has confessed to the act. Police will request that he be remanded in custody early next week," Piippo continues.
