The aim is to use the ATVs in diverse monitoring activities.

At the start of the year, the Helsinki Police Department was provided with two BRB Can-Am road-legal ATVs. The ATVs will be put to use in a variety of monitoring activities. They can also be used when searching for missing persons and in areas with difficult terrain. The Department is also prepared to provide assistance in search and rescue operations to the Western Uusimaa and Eastern Uusimaa Police Departments.

‘ATVs are well suited to monitoring related to maintaining public order and for traffic control. It’s easy to go off road and to get around in parks, beaches and other areas with challenging terrain. We plan to use the ATVs at larger events and demonstrations. They are a great fit for monitoring carried out in Kaivopuisto on First of May or for driving in front of a protest march, for example,’ says Superintendent Jere Roimu from the Helsinki Police Department.

The Helsinki Police Department decided to procure the ATVs after hearing about the positive experiences of the Oulu Police Department.

‘The Oulu Police Department has been using ATVs for monitoring duties in an urban environment for some time now. They have actively developed the use of ATVs in police work and have found them useful in many different types of operations.  Based on the excellent experiences relayed to us from Oulu, we decided to procure them for our department too,’ Roimu says.
