New permanent exhibition under construction - Christmas break from 10 December 2018 to 31 January 2019

What was the task of ‘kyytirättäri’, a relay crown servant? Where did they actually go all wrong - towards Brinkkala as the Finnish saying goes? When did the first Internet police officers begin working? The new permanent exhibition, under construction at the National Police Museum, will answer these questions and many more. The exhibition is due to open by summer 2019.

In the new exhibition, museum visitors will be able to walk along streets and alleys where the police do their everyday work.

“The name of the exhibition, ‘The police is here!’ refers to the variety of places in which the police perform their duties. The places may relate to an individual incident or be part of a broader story. The exhibition also displays ‘scenes of crime’, crime and accident cases which reflect the transformation of the police and compare the citizens’ sense of justice with the official interpretation of the law,” says Juha Vitikainen , Reseacher at the Museum.

The National Police Museum’s new permanent exhibition explores the role of the police as an actor in society, all the way from the Middle Ages to the present day, displaying everything from ancient courthouses with whipping poles to contemporary cybercrime. The transformation of the relationship between the police and members of the public is a key aspect: how was the police regarded in the past, and the role of the police throughout the ages.

Children’s section Pokela will be renewed as well

The functional elements of the new permanent exhibition are in a separate section, including the virtual patrol game and children’s own Pokela police station, known from previous exhibitions. The children’s section will be relocated within the museum, and opened for the public in February 2019. Pokela gets a new look and new, unique police-themed toys, but former items will also be available, including the small police overalls and a police van for children.

Christmas break until the end of January

Museum opening hours will change due to the construction of the permanent exhibition. The Christmas break will be longer than usual, as the museum will be closed from 10 December 2018 until 31 January 2019. The renewed children’s section Pokela will open on 1 February 2019, immediately after the Christmas break.

Two special exhibitions will be on display at the National Police Museum. The special exhibition celebrating the centennial year of Finland’s independence, Public order collapses - 1917 will be open until the end of 2019. Formally Qualified - a century of Finnish police education , presenting the history of police training in Finland, will remain open until autumn 2020, but from spring 2019, the premises will be gradually renewed due to the construction of the new permanent exhibition.
