The police’s intensive surveillance of pre-Christmas traffic caught a total of 252 suspected drunk drivers over two weekends. Of these, 75 drivers are suspected of driving while seriously intoxicated.
The police breathalysed a total of 73,176 drivers. On average, every 290th driver stopped by the patrols was suspected of drunk driving. A total of 61 of the stopped drivers were wanted by the police.
The number of drunk drivers caught in the course of pre-Christmas traffic surveillance in the evenings and at night has remained relatively unchanged for the last three years.
“Surveillance of drunk driving will continue until the end of the pre-Christmas season”, says Chief Superintendent Timo Ajaste from the National Police Board.
The police ran an intensive traffic surveillance campaign called ‘Sober in pre-Christmas traffic’ over the last two weekends of November (16–18 November and 23–25 November).
