Traffic safety has continued to show good development, and the number of road traffic fatalities has reached below 200 for the second year in a row. The biggest fall in road fatalities was seen in passengers travelling in passenger cars.

According to preliminary statistics reported to the police, 173 persons died in road traffic in 2023. The corresponding preliminary figure in 2022 was 196. The final number for 2023 will increase somewhat further once more exact statistics are available in early 2024.

Examination of the number of fatalities by road user group shows the biggest fall by far was in passengers travelling in passenger cars, whereas the biggest increase was in those travelling in vans.

A record low number of children under the age of 15 died between January and November 2023 – and only one pedestrian. In 2022, eight children died, two of whom were pedestrians, two cyclists, two in cars and two in other vehicles.

All road users contribute to achieving and improving the traffic safety situation: the authorities maintaining infrastructure, traffic control authorities, vehicles designed to be safe, the correct use of safety and protective equipment, etc. So together, we will create safe traffic, build on this and make 2024 even safer than last year.
