Yesterday, Thursday 6 February, we disclosed that the police in Southeast Finland are investigating a case of a missing minor.

The Southeast Finland Police are investigating the disappearance of an underaged child in Lappeenranta. The child left Finland for Russia through the border illegally on Friday 31 January. We also reported that the child is currently in the custody of Russian authorities, and discussions have been held between various authorities to return him to Finland.

At the moment, the priority of the police is to help authorities get the child back to Finland. Our task is to ensure the success of cooperation between authorities and to protect the privacy of those involved.

We understand that the issue is of interest and will spark public discussion, especially in the media. However, we would like to remind you that we aim to protect the child and their family, when disclosing information on a case involving a minor.

At the moment, the case of the missing minor is at a stage where we cannot disclose more information. We will provide more information on the situation next week or when the investigation has progressed. The police will not comment on any rumours circulating in the public at the moment.
