The Finnish passport and identity cards will have a new look on 1 January 2017 as the nature of Lapland, its fells, northern lights and snowflakes take centre stage in the design. The new main theme was chosen on the basis of a public survey conducted among visitors to the Nordic Travel Fair in January 2016, and partners of the Police Licence Administration.

Each double page inside the passport features different scenery from the North, and the outline of the Saana Fell is depicted both in the identity card and on the passport data page. Northern lights and snowflakes are shown in the visible printwork and in UV print.

Elements characterising Finland in the passport include the whooper swan, Finland’s coat of arms, a poem by Eino Leino and a lakeside landscape on the inner cover page of the passport. Passport cover colours will not change. The security features of passports and identity cards have been renewed.

The new Finnish passports and identity cards form part of the programme celebrating Finland’s 100th anniversary: the Finland 100 jubilee logo will be embossed on the back cover of the passport and UV printed on the identity card.

The reform was carried out in a cooperation project between the Police, the Finnish Border Guard, the Population Register Centre, the Finnish Immigration Service and the Ministry for Foreign Affairs.

Based on an invitation to tender, the new passports and identity cards will be produced from 1 January 2017 by the current identity card manufacturer, Gemalto Oy. The reformed appearance of passports and identity cards will not affect the validity of previously issued licence documents.
