Last week, the police performed intensified monitoring of drunk driving, both on ‘sober driving day’, Wednesday 6 June and over the weekend, on Friday and Saturday nights.

A total of 152 suspected drunk drivers were caught, 121 of them alcohol-related and 31 narcotics-related cases. In addition, 16 narcotics offences and two firearms offences were recorded, a total of 41 stopped drivers, wanted by the police, were apprehended,

and the number of breathalyser tests performed totalled 59,036. The number of those who had consumed alcohol, but remained under the limit, was 453.

Statistically, every 388th driver controlled during the week of monitoring was a drunk driver (on average, every 830th driver in the traffic flow is an alcohol-related drunk driver).

The high number, 388, is explained by the fact that the main focus of the monitoring campaign was on weekend nights, the time when drunk driving is most common.

The aim of the operation and informing the public about it is to remind drivers that intoxicants and traffic do not go together, and to prevent serious drunk driving accidents.
