From 30 July to 5 August 2018, the police will engage in intensified and high-profile drunk driving monitoring, particularly in holiday home municipalities, throughout the country.

Almost a third of the entire year’s road deaths occur during the period of June to August. In addition, the amount of drunk driving and speeding increases during the summer.

“Young road users with risk behaviour associated with issues such as the start and end of the summer holidays, summer events and other leisure activities form a special risk group,” says Chief Superintendent Heikki Ihalainen of the National Police Board.

The most typical accident involving personal injury is running off the road, which most often happens on the lower-level road network. The background to this often involves speeding or drunk driving.

“Nobody should take risks and drive under the influence of intoxicants, or travel in a vehicle driven by a person in such a condition,” Ihalainen points out.
