The police carried out an intensified traffic supervision operation in the vicinity of schools in August 2024. The operation resulted in a large number of sanctions, including those issued to drivers for speeding. Police appeal to drivers: Ensure that children have a safe way to and from school and exercise caution.

In the supervision theme at the start of schools, the police aimed to draw road users' attention to safe speeds, vigilance and compliance with pedestrian crossing rules and safe mobility in general.

The supervision operation saw the police intervene in speeding, pedestrian crossing and safety device violations as well as the use of mobile phones when supervising the safety of children on their way to and from school.

Supervision results

During the thematic supervision, which ended last week, the police intervened in the speed of a total of 1,903 drivers with a pecuniary penalty. The police intervened 134 times for failure to use safety devices and in 140 incidents of drivers using a hand-held mobile phone while driving. 69 riders received sanctions for cycling or operating a light e-vehicle on the pavement. Pedestrians were issued 13 traffic penalty fees for walking against a red light.

Considerable speeding in the vicinity of schools

According to Chief Superintendent Heikki Kallio, the police caught plenty of drivers speeding, some of whom were doing so in the vicinity of a school.

“A total of 1410 traffic penalty fees and 493 fines were imposed for speeding during the two-week supervision operation. A total of 82 drivers were temporarily banned from driving, almost all of them for significant speeding,” Chief Superintendent Heikki Kallio says.

Respect pedestrian crossings!

A total of 43 drivers failed to allow unhindered passage to persons on or preparing to step on to a pedestrian crossing. In addition, four drivers overtook, without stopping, a car that had stopped at a pedestrian crossing.

The police remind drivers that special caution is required when approaching children in traffic.
