In order to improve the occupational safety and protection of the police, the National Police Board will in 2018–2019 acquire fifteen Mercedes-Benz G280 CDI LAPV 5.4 vehicles for the use of the police. The vehicles are supplied by Veho Oy, a Hansel supplier, in accordance with the framework agreement. All eleven police departments in Finland will obtain one or more new vehicles.

The new vehicles will be armoured police vehicles that will be registered as lorries. The vehicles will offer a protection level sufficient for the Finnish police. The vehicles will be dark blue in colour, and they will be furnished with the standard technical equipment for emergency police vehicles.

The money for the vehicles comes from additional funding included in the 2018 budget, the purpose of which was to allocate funding for the procurement of additional equipment for the police for use in demanding situations, for improving operating performance, and for preparing for terrorist acts. The armoured vehicles to be acquired will improve the protection of the police significantly, ensuring that the police maintain their ability to operate and to protect citizens even in extreme situations.

The vehicles will improve the performance of the police and enhance their first response ability in operations that call for equipment with ballistic protection. However, the acquisition will not eliminate the need for mutual assistance between authorities or the need to continue collaboration with other security authorities.

The new vehicles will be used for regular patrolling, and they will play a visible role on the streets from early spring 2019. Sighting of an armoured police vehicle does not usually mean that something dangerous or out of the ordinary is taking place. In addition to patrolling, the vehicles will be used for security purposes in connection with state visits, events for the public and other events, as well as during emergency operations and certain special operations.
