A police patrol drives in a row on snowmobiles in the fells

The police met several Norwegian snowmobile drivers in Kilpisjärvi, who were unfamiliar with traffic regulations concerning snowmobiles.

Patrols of the Lapland Police Department, together with the wilderness supervisors of Metsähallitus, supervised off-road traffic in the Kilpisjärvi area. They met Norwegian snowmobile drivers, not all of whom had the required snowmobile track permit purchased in advance. In addition, some of them drove outside the tracks.

In Finland, snowmobiling outside snowmobile tracks or snowmobile trails is generally prohibited without the landowner's permission.

Buy a track permit (løypetillatelser) in advance and have your documents with you

When you are planning on snowmobiling in the vicinity of Kilpisjärvi, buy a track permit from the Kilpisjärven Ladut ry website. The Kilpisjärvi shop dont´t sell the permits anymore. If you are planning to ride a snowmobile further into the wilderness, all the way to the lake Raittijärvi, buy a permit from the Metsähallitus website eräluvat.fi. The Kilpisjärvi Nature Centre is now closed.

The snowmobile drivers met by the police did not all have the documents required in Finland with them. The police would like to remind that foreign snowmobile drivers must always carry documents proving their right to drive and a registration certificate of the vehicle.
