An intensified nationwide campaign on the weekend of 6-8 October focused on detecting excessive speeding and monitoring young people’s traffic behaviour and any meetups and rallies. However, there were fewer incidents of speeding than on a normal autumn weekend.

It’s often said that bad weather is the best police and this was certainly true on this occasion. Despite the bad weather, the police were not idle and a total of 331 fines and 108 traffic penalty fees were issued during the weekend. These numbers include all fines and traffic penalty fees issued and not just those issued to young people. In addition, 23 reports of causing a serious traffic hazard were filed.

There were 49 drivers who drove their vehicles so that they met the criteria for serious disregard, which means that the driving speed exceeded the maximum permitted speed by more than 30 km/h.

Twelve 17-year-olds holding an age exception permit for a passenger car driving licence received speeding fines. In addition, three persons are suspected of causing a serious traffic hazard and four of serious disregard.

Speed is a significant risk factor in fatal traffic accidents. As speeds increase, so do the risks of various errors resulting in an accident. The consequences of such accidents are also usually more serious in these cases.
