The next NATO summit, and Finland’s first as a NATO member, will take place on 11-12 July 2023 in Vilnius, the Latvian capital. NATO membership also affects the Finnish police.

NATO membership affects police operations and range of tasks in many ways. The police are the authority with main responsibility for internal security in Finland. The police are largely responsible for combatting internal and partly external threats to Finnish society in the initial phase.

From the police perspective, key NATO-related entities affecting police operations are the fight against terrorism, countering hybrid threats, host nation support related to the movement and presence of NATO forces as well as NATO’s resilience work related to developing civil preparedness. Based on their role, the police follow and participate in planning and preparation work in NATO structures.

Finnish preparedness for crises is based on a cooperation model for comprehensive security and seamless cooperation between authorities. The police are closely involved in this work.
