From 12 May 2025 onwards, individuals are recommended to activate the use of Suomi.fi Messages when identifying themselves in public administration e-services.

Whereas using Suomi.fi Messages will remain voluntary until the end of 2025, the aim is for as many people as possible to switch to receiving official communications electronically.

From the beginning of 2026, provided that the legislative amendment enters into force in the proposed form, the use of Suomi.fi Messages will no longer be voluntary for those who are able to use it.

– This means that from the beginning of next year, anyone identifying themself to use any public administration e-service will also have to prove that they are able to use electronic services. In other words, after that, all official communications – including those from the police – will be sent to Suomi.fi Messages and not by letter to the person’s home, explains Senior Officer Petri Pipatti at the National Police Board.

Persons who are unable to use Suomi.fi Messages despite individual electronic identification will be offered the opportunity to revert to traditional letter mail, but this will no longer remain an option for the majority of the population.

The Digital and Population Data Services Agency and Ministry of Finance are responsible for implementing the transition to digital communication with the authorities.
