The intensified monitoring of drunk driving was conducted across all police departments from Thursday 6 June until Sunday 9 June.

According to Heikki Ihalainen, Chief Superintendent of the National Police Board, around 39,000 breathalyser tests and 78 quick drug tests were carried out.

Around 2000 working hours were allocated to the breathalyser tests, and 136 drunk drivers under the influence of alcohol and 32 drivers under the influence of drugs were caught. Ihalainen states that this amount is somewhat normal in the summer time.

- The number of those who had consumed alcohol, but remained under the incriminating limit, was 821. This amount is similar to the amount of last month's drunk driving monitoring, says Ihalainen.

Personal injuries related to drunk driving cases are more common in the summer months.

- The police is actively conducting breathalyser tests and especially during the summer, at which time there are many drunk drivers and relating accidents, says Ihalainen.

Last year around 19,000 drunk drivers were caught in Finland.
