The enhanced monitoring of drunk driving was carried out in all police departments for 24 hours from 2 pm on Friday 10 May until 2 pm on Saturday 11 May.

According to Heikki Ihalainen , Chief Superintendent of the National Police Board, around 30,000 breathalyser tests and 72 quick drug tests were carried out.

Around 1,450 working hours were allocated to the breathalyser tests, and 65 drunk drivers under the influence of alcohol and 19 drivers under the influence of drugs were caught. According to Ihalainen, the amount is somewhat normal.

- The number of those who had consumed alcohol, but remained under the incriminating limit, was 665. Ihalainen states that this number can be seen as especially high and alarming.

Personal injuries related to drunk driving cases are more common in the summer months.

- Hopefully drivers remember that the police is actively conducting breathalyser tests especially during the summer, says Ihalainen.

Last year around 19,000 drunk drivers were caught in Finland.
