During a 24-hour monitoring of drunk driving conducted by the police, 21,651 drivers were breathalysed, 66 of which are suspected of driving while intoxicated. Of the suspects, 27 are suspected of driving while seriously intoxicated and 14 of driving while intoxicated.

Outside the monitoring, 38 drivers were caught elsewhere and suspected of driving while intoxicated.

During the 24-hour period, 104 people altogether were suspected of driving while intoxicated. A total of 16 wanted persons were also apprehended during the surveillance.

The monitoring took place from Friday 13 December at 2 pm until Saturday 14 December 2 pm.

According to Heikki Kallio , Chief Superintendent of the National Police Board, this 24-hour continuous monitoring was now organised for the third time. The monitoring was carried out with the available monitoring resources of the police departments, with most of the monitoring taking place during the evening and nighttime.

“The positive thing is that the number of drunk drivers was statistically smaller than during the November monitoring. Now every 328th monitored driver turned out to be suspected of driving while intoxicated, whereas in November, the same number was 217,” says Kallio.
