The police will conduct an intensive monitoring operation on heavy traffic throughout Finland from Monday to Sunday, 22 July to 28 July 2019.

All police departments in Finland will participate in this nationwide campaign. The special monitoring operation is part of the Europe-wide enforcement theme of the European Traffic Police Network (TISPOL).

Monitoring of heavy vehicle traffic has been one of the focus areas of the police in traffic safety work in 2019.

The aim of the operation is to improve road safety and combat crime associated with the shadow economy and transport.

- With regard to traffic safety, the focus of monitoring is targeted at the most prominent issues detected during the previous campaigns, such as compliance with driving hours and rest periods, fastening of the load, and the overall condition of the vehicle, says Chief Superintendent Heikki Kallio of the National Police Board.

The police also monitors the use of phones, tablets and computers and other factors that effect negatively the drivers attentiveness during driving as well as various blockades that might hinder seeing.
