On Wednesday, a plane crash at Räyskälä airport killed two German men on board. The cause of the accident is not yet known.
On Wednesday, 16 October 2024, around midday, police received an alert about a small plane accident at Räyskälä Airport. Two men on board the plane died in the accident. Both pilots were German citizens and approximately 60 years old. The police believe that both men were experienced pilots.
At this stage, the police have no information on the cause of the accident. The investigation into the cause of the accident will take several weeks and is being carried out by the police in cooperation with the Safety Investigation Authority, Finland (SIAF).
SIAF conducts an investigation into the aviation accident in cooperation with the police to the extent that the investigation team considers appropriate for the purposes of the safety investigation.
It is currently known that the small plane crashed shortly after take-off and caught fire. According to SIAF, it is quite certain that the aircraft's engine was stopped at the time of the crash.
The aircraft involved in the accident is a T-6 Texan, an American-built aircraft from the Second World War. The aircraft was in German ownership. Police believe that the plane was on a test flight before it was supposed to be transferred to Germany.
The police are now trying to build up a full picture of the accident by interviewing witnesses and persons connected with the case. The investigation continues with a cause of death investigation and an air accident investigation. At this stage, the police do not suspect any crime in connection with the incident.
