Jari Liukku appointed police chief at Helsinki Police Department
The National Police Board has appointed Jari Liukku, LLM (LLM with court training), as police chief at Helsinki Police Department effective as of 1 April 2024. Four people applied for the post of police chief at Helsinki Police Department, which is for a term of five years.
Liukku has diverse and wide-ranging leadership experience in Finnish police management and international assignments. Since March 2017, he has headed the European Serious and Organised Crime Centre (ESOCC) at Europol. Before this, Liukku served among other things as police chief of Western Uusimaa Police Department in 2010-2017, deputy police chief at Helsinki Police Department in 2005-2010 and Deputy Police Chief of the National Bureau of Investigation in 2002-2005.
The police chief heads the police department and is responsible for the operations of the department as well as for the effectiveness, performance and development of operations. The police chief is tasked with managing the police department in accordance with the established objectives of the Police Administration, and with managing financial and human resources. He confirms the police department's policies and operational priorities and is responsible for the police department's readiness and preparedness. He is also responsible for the police department's stakeholder work and cooperation, as well as effective communications.
