National Police Board of Finland, units and services

The National Police Board’s tasks include planning, directing, developing and supervising police operations and the related support functions. In addition, it is responsible for the equal availability of police services nationwide, decides on cooperation between police units and is in charge of their performance management. The National Police Commissioner is responsible for managing, developing and overseeing the work of the National Police Board and the administrative sector of the police.

    Police helpline

    The police helpline gives advice on non-urgent matters regarding licences, appointment bookings, e-services and traffic surveillance.

    Price of service

    The cost for a call to the Police is

    • the local network charge (pvm) if you call using a landline number
    • cellular phone charge (mpm) if you use a mobile phone
    • international call charge if you call from abroad.

    You will pay for the call in line with your operator tariff. Waiting time is also paid for.

Gambling Administration at the National Police Board

  • Description
    The Gambling Administration of the National Police Board supervises gambling services. The National Police Board is an organisation within the administrative sector of the Ministry of the Interior. As an independent supervisory authority, it is responsible for supervising lotteries at national level and for compiling statistics on lotteries. The Gambling Administration’s offices are located in Riihimäki. The Gambling Administration’s duties are to: · issue opinions and advice on gambling · produce guidelines, disseminate information and provide training in issues related to gambling services · supervise the legality of gambling services · intervene in the running and marketing of unlawful gambling operations. In its supervision duties, the Gambling Administration cooperates with the police and may submit requests for investigation in suspected criminal matters to the police. Efficient supervision of the gambling sector requires extensive international and national cooperation with interest groups and between public authorities.

Information Technology Centre of the Police

Police Materials Centre

  • Description
    The Police Materials Centre is tasked with the procurement of goods and services commissioned by the procurement steering group at the National Police Board of Finland in accordance with the legislation in force, the regulations and guidelines of the Ministry of the Interior and the National Police Board, and with cooperation with domestic and international stakeholders in accordance with the policies of the materials management and procurement unit at the National Police Board. Other responsibilities include the production, maintenance and participation in the development of information in the police materials information systems and the police ordering system, contract and supplier management, the implementation of deliveries of police vehicles to police units, the depreciation and post-treatment of state-owned assets, the planning, monitoring and analysis of the lifecycle of the types of material and equipment used by the police, participation in the development of police procurement activities, advising the procurement and materials unit, and participation in cooperation with authorities and stakeholders in the sector. The Police Materials Centre produces and maintains information on the means, equipment and devices approved for use by the police.

Security Sector Supervision unit

  • Description
    The National Police Board and its Security Sector Supervision unit are responsible for providing general guidance for private security services and their supervision. It grants business licences for the security sector upon application - approves the persons in charge, managers and deputies and temporary managers for business licence holders, as well as trainers for the use of force and use of firearms, and in security stewarding - makes amendments to the terms and conditions and limitations of business licences for the security sector or the licences of individuals and cancels licences for the security sector, either upon application or at the request of the authorities.
