Examinations for the firearms officers of firearms dealers in 2022

Examinations for the persons in charge of firearms dealers and brokers in 2024

The National Police Board’s Firearms Administration holds examinations for persons in charge in accordance with Section 16 of the Firearms Decree on

  • Tuesday 20 February 2024 (registration and payment no later than 30.01.2024)
  • Tuesday 21 May 2024 (registration and payment no later than 30.04.2024)
  • Tuesday 3 September 2024 (registration and payment no later than 13.08.2024)
  • Tuesday 12 November 2024 (registration and payment no later than 22.10.2024)

The place for the examination is Riihimäki. In the exam, you are required to know the statutes that are current at that time. The parts of the statutes are listed here.

Registration and participation fees

You can register for the person in charge examination in our online service. The registration form to be used is the Registration for the person in charge examination. The €160 participation fee is payable when you register. 

Private individuals:
You can find the registration form in police e-services. Go to Services for private individuals > Firearms > Training and examination fees.

Firearms dealers:
If you are a firearms dealer, you can register one or more persons for the examination. You can find the form in police e-services. Go to Services for business and organisations > Firearms > Training and examination fees. Participation fees are payable when you register.

Passing the exam is a requirement for acting as a person in charge

The exam must be passed if you want to be certified as a person in charge for a firearms dealer or broker. You can take the exam in either Finnish or Swedish (not yet in English). The exam consists of two sections. Successful completion of each section qualifies the candidate to act as a person in charge in the corresponding trade.

The sections are

  1. engaging in the firearms trade, exchange, hiring out, brokering and storage
  2. the manufacture of firearms, firearm components, cartridges and specially dangerous projectiles as well as the repair and conversion of firearms and firearm components.

Bring an identity card or passport

Please remember to bring your valid identity card or valid passport so your identity can be verified at the entry of the examination. A driving licence is not considered proof of identity.

In the examination, you must demonstrate that you understand current legal provisions. A list of provisions included in the scope of the examination can be found on the Police website along with trade permits for dealing in firearms.
